Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl, as well as Guy Edwards, got Lauda out. Merzario, as a former Ferrari driver, was the only one familiar enough with the type of seat-belt buckle to be able to undo it ‘blind’ in the smoke and flames.
